Concealed Functionality

Chroma Interiors was asked by Phillips Associates to design the kitchen of this Takapuna Beach residence. Originally built in the 1920s and extended in 1995, the home recently endured a fire, presenting an opportunity to redesign the kitchen.

At our first meeting, the client expressed a vision for a kitchen that didn’t resemble a traditional kitchen. In response, we concealed most of the appliances behind custom cabinetry, with even the pantry discreetly hidden.

The client, a collector of antique and traditional furniture, wished to reflect this aesthetic in the kitchen’s design. We crafted cabinetry with applied mouldings and integrated hidden handles that reflected this taste. Neutral-toned tiles were selected for both the splashback and island front, while Taj Mahal quartzite was chosen for the expansive island and back benchtop.

The result, Concealed Functionality, is a kitchen that harmonizes classic elegance with modern convenience, beautifully embodying the client’s traditional style while offering superb practicality.
